Lymphedema and lipedema are chronic conditions that significantly affect functionality, body image, and quality of life.
Despite their frequency, they remain largely underdiagnosed and are often confused with other conditions, leading to delayed or inadequate treatment.
Modern plastic and reconstructive surgery now offers specialized tools for the comprehensive management of lymphatic and adipose system disorders, combining accurate diagnosis, conservative approaches, and advanced surgical techniques.

My involvement in lymphedema represents a central pillar of my clinical and academic activity. My doctoral research focuses on the surgical reconstruction of lymphedema, a condition of particular complexity and significant functional impact.
Since 2019, I have worked systematically at Rennes University Hospital (France). During this period, I managed a large number of cases, applying high-precision techniques that require in-depth knowledge of lymphatic anatomy and specialized microsurgical expertise.
My mentor is the Korean surgeon JP Hong, a pioneer of supermicrosurgery, trained by Isao Koshima and internationally recognized in the field of surgical lymphedema reconstruction.
This clinical experience is accompanied by active scientific engagement and contribution to the international literature, reinforcing the continuous development and evidence-based validation of the therapeutic protocols applied.
The management of lymphedema and lipedema at Dr. Athens is based on individualized planning, tailored to the stage of the disease and the specific needs of each patient.
Accurate diagnosis and staging
Correct diagnosis is the foundation of treatment. Clinical presentation, medical history, and anatomical characteristics are carefully evaluated in order to determine the most appropriate therapeutic plan.
Conservative management and guidance
In selected cases, specialized conservative methods are implemented in collaboration with appropriate healthcare professionals, aiming at stabilization and improvement of daily functionality.
Surgical reconstruction with supermicrosurgical techniques
When indicated, modern surgical techniques are applied, such as:
These interventions aim to improve lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling, and restore function, with long-term follow-up.
The goal is not only the reduction of swelling, but also the improvement of functionality, body image, and overall quality of life. Treatment—particularly for lymphedema—is a long-term process that requires consistency, expertise, and close medical guidance—core principles of the Dr. Athens Medical Transition Program.
